Six intriguing performances and many excellent actors on the program of the 23rd Čavle-Omišalj Theatre Festival from June 21 to June 28, 2024. Ahead of the festival, two children's performances - traditionally free of charge
For twenty-three years, the towns of Grobnik and Omišalj have hosted the joint cultural event of the Omišalj-Čavle Theatre Festival, which brings famous actors and excellent performances of various genres to these two locations. The performances will alternate from June 21 to June 28, in the ancient Kaštel Grobnik and on the Prikešte square in Omišalj, and in case of rain and bad weather, the performances will be held in the Čavle Cultural Center and the Omišalj Community Center.
Collaboration of local governments
“The uniqueness of this festival lies in the collaboration between two local government units, the Municipality of Čavle and the Municipality of Omišalj, former Frankopan castles, areas rich in cultural tradition and folk creativity“, explained Ivana Cvitan Polić, the Mayor of Čavle.
Financing and organization
The festival is financed by the Municipalities of Čavle and Omišalj, with the support of their tourist boards. The program director is Denis Redić. The festival will open on Friday, June 21 at Kaštel Grobnik and close seven days later, on June 28, at Prikešte square in Omišalj. “I want to emphasize that admission to all performances is free. So, there are no ticket charges in this 23rd year of the festival, which is indeed a rarity in our Croatian theater scene,“ said Mirela Ahmetović, the Mayor of Omišalj.
Festival's competitive nature
The festival has a competitive nature. The audience chooses the best performance, while the jury composed of Višnja Višnjić Karković, Bogdana Čiča, and Robert Zaharija selects the best male and female lead, the best directorial achievement, and the best overall performance.
Children's performances
Ahead of the festival, at the initiative of the organizers from the Municipalities of Čavle and Omišalj, and with the aim of bringing theater closer to children and further sensitizing them to the tradition of the festival, children's performances are also held. This year, on June 20, the play “Adventure in Mouse School” by Geronimo Stilton, produced by the Law Theater, will be performed at the Omišalj Community Center. The same play will be performed a day later at the Čavle Cultural Center.
Official festival program
On Friday, June 21, at Kaštel Grobnik at 9 PM, the festival will officially open with the play “Nothing Will Happen to Them” produced by Moruzgva Theater. This brilliant performance by Ecija Ojdanić and Fran Mašković talks about an average family with a long marriage, a worried mother, a liberal father, and at the end of the day, a long-lasting love facing a crisis.
Performances on the program
On Sunday, June 23, in Omišalj, the festival program continues with the play “Caveman” by the masterful actor and director Peđa Gvozdić. It is the longest-running one-man show on Broadway, and whether you are a young couple, an old couple, a former or future couple, or have no money, you must see this unfiltered comedy, only for adults 16+.
On Tuesday, June 25, at Kaštel Grobnik at 9 PM, Planet Art Theater will perform the play “Who's Crazy Here” starring Marko Torjanac and Natalija Đorđević. Awaiting the imminent catastrophe, our protagonists seek refuge in Eden Clinic, leaving us with the question of which side of madness we choose to be on.
On Wednesday, June 26, in Omišalj, the play “When the South Wind Blows” by B-Glad production will be performed. Mimi and Gita are best friends in their early thirties, like sisters, but their long friendship is now facing great challenges as new moments of hiding the truth, brutal (in)sincerity, and even jealousy have crept into their lives. Petra Kraljev and Jagoda Kumrić in roles you've never seen them in before.
On Thursday, June 27, at Kaštel Grobnik, Enio Meštrović - Ričard will perform his play “Eye to Eye with the Lord”. The play's plot revolves around the sublime moment of death, when the main character, well-known Ričard, comes to St. Peter for a confrontation with God, discussing his life's sins. The monologues contain plenty of brutal, vulgar comments, and it is up to the 18+ audience to grasp the true message.
Closing performance of the festival
On Friday, June 28, in Omišalj, on the last day of the festival, the theater troupe Lectirum will traditionally come with the play “Happy People”. Starring: Ksenija Pajić, Natalija Đorđević, Siniša Popović, Mladen Čutura. The plot of this romantic comedy takes place in a theater during a performance. The audience watches the audience played by actors. The author herself says that this text raises the question of why we cannot get closer to each other and why it is so difficult for us to master the art of living.
All performances start at 9 PM. In case of bad weather, alternative venues are the Omišalj Community Center and the Čavle Cultural Center. There are no ticket reservations; it is enough to arrive early and take your place.
Admission to all performances is free.
Creation time: 22 June, 2024
