Rijeka experienced a significant increase in tourist traffic during August 2024, confirming its position as an attractive destination on the Adriatic. A total of approximately 45,191 tourist arrivals were recorded, representing a 4% increase compared to the same period last year. Foreign tourists accounted for the majority with 42,364 arrivals, while domestic tourists numbered 2,827, marking a 36% increase compared to August 2023. These figures indicate a successful strategy in the development of year-round tourism, on which Rijeka has been focusing more in recent years.
According to data from local tourist boards, the number of overnight stays also showed impressive growth, surpassing results from previous years. A total of over 123,000 overnight stays were recorded, an increase of 16% compared to the record year of 2019. This statistic suggests that tourists are staying longer in the city, with the highest number of overnight stays achieved by guests from Germany, accounting for 19% of the total number of overnight stays, followed by tourists from Italy with a 17% share in arrivals. It is noteworthy that a larger portion of overnight stays was achieved in private accommodation, which accounts for 58.91% of the total accommodation capacity, while hotels account for 24.7%.
One of the important factors contributing to the success of this year's tourist season is the variety of accommodation capacities and the increase in hotel capacities, including the opening of luxury facilities such as the Hilton Costabella Resort. This five-star hotel has significantly contributed to the growth of hotel accommodation in the city, providing additional offerings for more demanding guests. Additionally, planned investments in new hotels, such as the renovation of the Hotel Jadran under the Tribute Portfolio brand, will further enhance the city's tourist offer.
It is also important to note that cruise ships have played a significant role in increasing the number of tourists in Rijeka this year. Over 20,000 visitors arrived by ship during July and August, with a large portion choosing to stay in the city and explore cultural and historical attractions such as Trsat Castle and the city's old town. Rijeka is increasingly positioning itself on the map of cruise destinations, and this trend is expected to continue in the future.
Tourist results indicate that Rijeka, in addition to its seasonal offer, has become a desirable destination for short city breaks, which confirms the strategy of local authorities and tourism professionals who continually work on promoting the city and improving its tourist infrastructure. Investments in accommodation diversity, cultural offerings, and promotional campaigns in key markets have contributed to the constant growth of tourist traffic, ensuring that Rijeka will continue to be one of the most desirable tourist destinations in Croatia in the future.
