Lošinj has once again found itself among the best global destinations for sustainable tourism, confirming its long-standing commitment to preserving natural heritage through participation in the "Green Destinations Top 100 Stories" competition. This award for the year 2024 represents not only an acknowledgment of the sustainable development of the destination but also an inspiration for many other destinations seeking innovative solutions to their environmental challenges. Lošinj is particularly highlighted this year thanks to the project "New view of the Lošinj underwater world," led by the Blue World Institute, which aims to educate and raise awareness about the protection of marine ecosystems.
The project "New view of the Lošinj underwater world" employs innovative technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to convey to visitors the importance of preserving the underwater world. A special attraction of this project is a module called "Scan the Island," which allows tourists to obtain rich information about local natural landmarks by scanning QR codes. By using VR glasses, visitors can experience the acoustic world of underwater noise, highlighting how noise pollution can affect marine organisms. These innovative approaches ensure that tourists not only enjoy the beauty of the island but also learn about the importance of preserving nature.
Lošinj is not a newcomer in the world of sustainable tourism. Since 2016, this small island has been participating in the "Top 100 Green Destinations" competition, the largest global program that recognizes the sustainability of tourist destinations. Over the years, Lošinj has developed a sustainable tourism strategy that includes not only the protection of natural heritage but also the active involvement of the local community. A key element of the destination's success is collaboration with the local population, which is recognized as a key partner in ecosystem preservation. Through such projects, the local community plays a crucial role in sustainable development, creating a strong connection with the natural resources upon which tourism depends.
At the Global Green Destinations Days conference, held in October 2023 in Tallinn, Lošinj was presented as an example of good practice, alongside more than 100 other destinations worldwide. Experts from various countries evaluated the destinations based on criteria of efficiency, innovation, and the applicability of solutions to other destinations. Lošinj stood out not only because of the project "New view of the Lošinj underwater world" but also due to its long-term strategy, which includes numerous other ecological projects, including the revitalization of wooden shipbuilding through the project "Wood is first."
It is important to note that participation in this global program brings not only recognition but also the opportunity for further cooperation with other destinations that share similar challenges in environmental conservation. Lošinj utilizes this program to enhance its practices and connect with global experts in the field of sustainability. Additionally, the destination is involved in numerous other projects at the national and international level, including the European tourism sustainability indicator system (ETIS) and the Croatian Observatory of Sustainable Tourism (CROSTO).
Projects like "New view of the Lošinj underwater world" demonstrate how innovative tools like AR and VR technology can have an exceptional impact on raising awareness of ecological issues among visitors. In addition to technological innovations, Lošinj also implements traditional forms of nature protection, including the restoration of old sailing ships like Nerezine, which has been converted into an interpretation center for visitors. These initiatives not only protect the island's natural resources but also create new attractions that enrich Lošinj's tourist offer.
As it continues its journey toward a sustainable future, Lošinj faces challenges but continues to stand out as one of the leaders in environmental conservation and the promotion of responsible tourism. This award for the year 2024 further confirms the long-standing efforts of the destination and motivates further efforts to preserve natural heritage for future generations. Lošinj continues to develop as an example of a destination that successfully combines tourism with environmental conservation, providing inspiration not only to local communities but to the entire world.
