Island Cres, located in the Kvarner archipelago, offers excellent opportunities for nature enthusiasts seeking an active vacation. Every year, from September to October, the island’s tourist board organizes free guided tours under the name "Cres Hike," which offer tourists the chance to explore this amazing island through hiking and walking. These tours cover numerous trails connecting the coast to the island's interior, passing through forests, olive groves, and historic sites.

The "Cres Hike" program starts in mid-September and runs until mid-October, with organizers including local guides and members of the Osoršćica Mountaineering Society ensuring an unforgettable experience for all participants. These tours are an ideal way to explore the natural beauty of the island as well as to better understand its rich flora and fauna, including rare species such as the Griffon Vulture, which nests on the steep cliffs of the northern part of the island, near the village of Beli. This part of the island is known for its Tramuntana forest, which hides ancient trails and historic ruins, making it an essential destination for nature lovers.

Diversity of trails and natural beauty

Cres is known for its numerous hiking trails that offer a variety of experiences, from easy coastal walks to more challenging routes through hilly interiors. As part of the "Cres Hike" project, participants can choose from several trails of different lengths and difficulties. Each of these trails offers a unique opportunity to explore nature, with particular highlights being olive groves, dry stone walls, and panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea. The trail through the olive groves is especially popular as it leads through centuries-old olive groves, providing visitors with insight into the traditional way of life on the island and the rich history of olive cultivation on Cres.

One of the most popular routes is the trail leading from Martinšćica to Vidovići, passing through peaceful villages and picturesque landscapes. This 5.5-kilometer route is ideal for those who want to enjoy a leisurely walk while exploring the island's natural beauty. Alongside it, there is also a trail leading from Cres to Saint Bartholomew, with a length of 7 kilometers, providing participants with the opportunity to discover less-known parts of the island.

Ecological significance of the island

Island Cres is special due to its ecological significance. Nearly 95% of its area is protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network, which includes the most important natural habitats in Europe. Cres is known for its diversity of plant and animal species, and the island is adorned with forests, dry stone walls, and unique flora that includes over 1,400 different plant species. Plants such as sage, immortelle, and spurge often grow along the trails, adding an authentic Mediterranean aroma to the entire environment.

Lake Vransko, located in the central part of the island, is one of the few freshwater lakes on Croatian islands. This lake not only provides drinking water for the island but also serves as an important habitat for many birds. Tourists participating in Cres Hike tours often have the opportunity to enjoy views of this beautiful lake, which contrasts with the Adriatic coast surrounding the island.

Organization and safety on tours

All tours that are part of the "Cres Hike" project are free for participants, but it is necessary to register in advance due to limited spots. Participants must be physically prepared for walking, as walking is at their own risk. It is recommended to wear sports shoes, light clothing, sun protection, and to carry enough water and food. Organizers warn that in case of bad weather, there may be changes in the tour schedule or cancellations, so it is important to follow official notifications.

To participate, it is necessary to send a registration via email to jadranka@visitcres.hr, and more information about the tours and the project itself can be found on the official website of the town of Cres. These guided tours provide an unforgettable experience and an opportunity to explore the unique island of Cres, whose natural environment and rich history will leave no one indifferent.
