26. Chestnut Festival in Sveti Ivan Zelina, which took place on October 13, 2024, was much more than just an ordinary celebration of autumn fruits. This two-day festival attracted thousands of visitors who, in addition to chestnuts, enjoyed a series of events that combined nature, sports, gastronomy, education, and entertainment. Specially designed programs allowed participants to connect with nature, learn something new, and engage in activities tailored for all generations.
Revived eco-trail and return to nature
Saturday, October 12, began with the ceremonial opening of the renewed educational eco-trail "Through Zelinska Gora," a 6-kilometer long trail through the forest landscape. The walk was not only an opportunity to enjoy the beauties of nature but also to participate in the interactive program "HealthyFIT Experience by Mario Valentić," which combined physical activities such as body&mind training and breathing techniques with a natural environment. Participants were rewarded with a lunch outdoors, concluding Saturday's adventure in nature.
Gastronomic delicacies and competitions
Sunday's Chestnut Festival was an opportunity for food lovers to taste the best of local offerings. The Amanita Association prepared a spectacle with mushroom stew, barbecue, and various sweet and savory delicacies. The Saint Ivan Zelina moto and off-road club contributed to the atmosphere by organizing a gathering with roasted chestnuts and premium beans. A cooking competition for hunters was held in the hunting lodge, where contestants battled for the title of the best hunter-chef. Winners were announced in the afternoon, and visitors enjoyed the stew prepared by the contestants.
Family content and entertainment for children
The Chestnut Festival did not forget the youngest visitors. The "Our Children" Society organized a series of activities at the "Joyful Meadow," including a children's olympiad, competitions, and games that attracted a crowd of children. The program started at noon, and children were thrilled with various prizes and fun games in the fresh air. Parents also enjoyed witnessing how their youngest spent the day filled with laughter and play.
Hiking and cycling tours
For those eager for adventure and recreation, hiking and cycling clubs organized walks and cycling tours along the beautiful trails of Zelinska Gora. Participants in the hike, organized by the "Fit Forma" Association, set out towards the top of Kladeščica, and the first among them to arrive without the help of a vehicle were rewarded with a portion of roasted chestnuts. The cycling club "Sic" organized the 7th cycling event at the Chestnut Festival, gathering numerous cyclists who enjoyed challenging routes and stunning landscapes.
New traffic system and ecological awareness
One of the key elements of this year's Chestnut Festival was the new traffic regulation that allowed for easier and quicker access to the location without long waits. Vehicles were directed in one-way traffic, avoiding congestion and enabling smooth movement. The city of Sveti Ivan Zelina and the Tourist Board promoted the concept of ride-sharing to reduce the festival's ecological footprint, which many visitors responded to, contributing to environmental preservation.
Culture and local community
The Chestnut Festival is not only a gastronomic and sports event but also a cultural spectacle that gathers local artists and craftsmen. Visitors had the opportunity to buy homemade products and unique souvenirs, as well as to get acquainted with the traditions of this region. Artists and craftsmen exhibited their works, contributing to the richness of the offerings and the authenticity of the event.
This event, which combines nature, culture, gastronomy, and community, has become a must-visit on the tourist map of Croatia, attracting visitors not only from nearby cities but also from abroad. The Chestnut Festival in Sveti Ivan Zelina remains a unique event that offers much more than just an ordinary chestnut celebration – it is a celebration of autumn, togetherness, and life in harmony with nature.
