Croatian Telecom has implemented a 5G network at the new container terminal in Rijeka, marking a new technological milestone in the maritime industry. HT provides a comprehensive Managed Service for 5G communication, enabling complete control and monitoring of the network.
HT has chosen Rijeka Gateway, a port operating company established by A.P. Moller – Maersk and ENNA Group, to develop and manage the terminal, which will begin operations in 2025. APMT, part of the Maersk Group that manages wireless connectivity in over 70 ports worldwide, will test this new operational model in Rijeka. The migration from the current 5G NSA to advanced 5G SA architecture will ensure Rijeka Gateway's status as the first user of a dedicated Network Slice for industrial application.
"This project demonstrates Rijeka Gateway's trust in our ability to provide highly available service for continuous 24/7 port operations. It confirms our strategy in delivering business-critical communication through our public mobile network," said Marijana Bačić, Member of the Board and Chief Operating Officer for Business Customers of Croatian Telecom.
Innovative Terminal in Rijeka
"The terminal in Rijeka is designed as one of the most technologically advanced in the region," said Peter Corfitsen, CEO of Rijeka Gateway. "From the beginning of the design, our goal has been to minimize the impact on the environment and the local community. The terminal will have remotely operated cranes and almost all equipment will be electric. We will install advanced systems for energy optimization and overall terminal management. Quality and reliable communication infrastructure is key for this mode of operation, and cooperation with Croatian Telecom is crucial for success."
The Rijeka Gateway project is one of the most important infrastructure projects in Croatia's recent history. This comprehensive revitalization of Rijeka's coastal area represents a significant contribution to the local economy, considering that most project contracts will be executed by local companies. Rijeka Gateway will be the most modern remotely operated container terminal in this part of Europe, with a concession for 50 years. The total investment value is 380 million euros, and the project has been declared strategically important for the Republic of Croatia.
The terminal will serve as the main entry point for container traffic to the countries and markets in the European hinterland, increasing Rijeka's strategic importance in global logistics chains. This initiative will also enable improved efficiency and environmental sustainability, which is crucial for future development.
5G technology will enable advanced services and terminal operation optimization, from remote crane operation to real-time container tracking. Croatian Telecom will ensure a reliable network infrastructure that will support all operations at the terminal, increasing efficiency and reducing operational costs. This technological integration will also enable better planning and resource management, which is crucial for competitiveness in the global market.
This project is just one example of how technological innovations can transform industries and contribute to sustainable development. Given the speed of technological development, similar projects are expected to become more frequent, bringing new opportunities for growth and development.
The Rijeka Gateway project will significantly contribute to the local community, not only through economic benefits but also by creating new jobs and improving infrastructure. Cooperation with Croatian Telecom ensures top-notch technological support necessary to achieve these goals.
The transformation of the container terminal in Rijeka is an example of how modern technology can be used to enhance industrial operations and improve the quality of life in local communities. This model is expected to be replicated in other ports around the world, setting new standards in the industry.
