The Croatian Army continues to play a crucial role in infrastructure projects across the country, with one recent example of their involvement being the installation of the Bailey bridge at a new location in the Municipality of Marija Bistrica. This bridge, 30 meters long with a load capacity of up to nine tons, is of great importance to the local population and is especially significant for farmers, pilgrims, and tourists who frequently visit the area.
The Bailey bridge installation project, which spanned two days, was challenging, but it was successfully carried out by members of the Pontoon Bridge Engineer Battalion. Equipped with specialized equipment and technical knowledge, the soldiers launched the bridge using pre-prepared concrete supports and bridge elements. The bridge, used as a temporary solution, allows safe passage over the Krapina River, significantly improving transportation connectivity in this region.
Broader Role of the Army in Local Projects
The Croatian Army not only participates in infrastructure projects like this one but also plays a key role in maintaining social and cultural events. Marija Bistrica, as one of the most renowned Marian shrines in Croatia, attracts numerous pilgrims and tourists. Every year, a series of events is held here, including summer festivals and Advent celebrations, which further enhances the importance of the bridge in facilitating access to this religious center.
Marija Bistrica, which attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually, often depends on infrastructure projects to maintain accessibility and safety. The Bailey bridge, relocated from its previous site and reinstalled on the Krapina River, further contributes to transportation connectivity. Historically, the bridge, previously installed in 1999 and donated by the Ministry of Defense, was damaged in April 2023, making its replacement essential to maintain traffic flow in this part of the Krapina-Zagorje County.
Significance of the Bridge for the Local Community
The Bailey bridge plays a key role in the daily life of the local population. It is especially important for farmers who rely on easier access to agricultural land, as well as for tourists and pilgrims visiting Marija Bistrica. This bridge is not only a physical connection but also a symbol of cooperation between the Croatian Army and the local community, providing not only logistical but also moral support.
The Mayor of the Municipality of Marija Bistrica, Josip Milički, specifically praised the speed and efficiency of the Croatian Army, emphasizing that without their help, such a project would have been difficult to execute. In a conversation with the media, Milički highlighted that such military involvement is invaluable for local communities, especially in rural areas like this one.
Planned final works, including the installation of decking and access roads, are expected to be completed within the next few weeks, after which the bridge will be fully operational for traffic. This project further strengthens the cooperation between the army and the local community, enhancing the quality of life and ensuring long-term benefits for the region.
