Members of the Training Center for Military Working Dog Handlers "Captain Krešimir Ivošević", Military Police Regiment, participated with their service dogs in late June in an international training for the use of service dogs for military police tasks of NATO member states in Fritzlar, Germany.
The training aimed to develop the skills of handlers and military police dogs in a global context, harmonize tactical procedures, and exchange experiences regarding equipment and materials for K9 tasks.
Main parts of the training included overcoming obstacles, searching for explosives and drugs, and apprehending suspects. The physical readiness of handlers, the courage of dogs, and operational efficiency were tested through these activities.
Additionally, the training included exercises for boarding and disembarking from Airbus H145 helicopters and a fast tactical rope retrieval exercise for handlers and dogs using a helicopter hoist during air transport.
Providing First Aid to Dogs
Along with physical and tactical exercises, a significant part of the training was dedicated to providing first aid to injured dogs. This component trains handlers for a quick response in case of injuries, which is crucial for preserving the lives and health of service dogs in the field.
Participation of Croatian Teams
Croatian teams, Sergeant Major Dražen Šukalo with service dog Max Issy Top dual-purpose (protection and explosive detection) and Sergeant Major Zdenko Mirt with service dog Sony Issy Top dual-purpose (protection and drug detection), successfully completed all activities and will apply the acquired knowledge in further training of our handlers and dogs.
The training was also an opportunity to exchange experiences and enhance international cooperation. Croatian handlers had the opportunity to connect with colleagues from other countries, contributing to strengthening international relations and joint security.
International Cooperation
In addition to Croatian handlers, handlers with dogs from the Czech Republic, Poland, Belgium, and the host Germany also attended the training. The participation of different countries allowed for a rich exchange of experiences and best practices, thereby improving the quality of training and operational capabilities of all participants.
Besides practical exercises, the training also included a theoretical part where participants had the opportunity to learn about the latest techniques and tactics in working with service dogs. This knowledge will be valuable in further work and training of military police teams in their home countries.
The training program was intensive and demanding, but all participants showed a high level of professionalism and dedication. The successful completion of this training confirms the readiness of military police teams to face various challenges in international missions and operations.
The return of Croatian teams from the training brings new knowledge and experiences that will be implemented in the daily work of the Training Center for Military Working Dog Handlers "Captain Krešimir Ivošević". This training not only enhances the capabilities of handlers and dogs but also strengthens international ties and cooperation among allies.
